In Japan, it is traditional for parents to dress their children up in fine
traditional clothes for girls at the age of 3 and 7, and for boys at the
age of 5 and 7. This is not done on their birthday, but is instead done
every year in a certain time period in November for all children that
turned the appropriate age that year. Generally, parents take their children
to a shrine, and Meiji-Jingu in central Tokyo is one of the most popular
places. The children are paraded around and photographed like crazy. It is
very cute to watch. The name of the ceremony is shichi-go-san which literally
means 7-5-3.
