Hitomi and I visited a free gallery with displays of Hiroshige's ukiyo-e
(woodblock prints). Part of the gallery was an opportunity to maker our
own small print. The way it works is that there are wood blocks that are
carved such that all parts of the picture of a given color are flush, and
everything else is carved away. You paint the appropriate color onto the
wood, and then stamp it down on the card. You then repeat this with each
color until you have the final product. The challenges include making sure
that you have an even spread of paint, and also that you align the print
in the guides properly so that the colors line up.
