This is a picture of the Palace of the Popes which was built in the 14th
century when the Popes fled the political turmoil in Rome and took up
residence in Avignon. 7 official popes and 2 "anti-popes" reigned in Avignon.
The anti-popes were Popes that ruled in Avignon during a "schism" in the
Catholic Church.
