This is one of Paris's more unusual tourist attractions. A few centuries back,
downtown Paris was running out of land, but had numerous cemetaries that
were so old that no one even remembered who were burried there. So, they
decided to dig up the graves, place the bones in some abandoned tunnels
from former rock quarries, and then re-use the cemetary land. The end result
is that there are now several million skeletons neatly stacked in the caves
below the streets of Paris, and tourists can wander through the caves to
check them out.
