I believe that this is a statue of St. Denis who was a martyr
that was among those persecuted by the Romans. The Romans chopped the heads off
of people accused of being Christian, and supposedly around 250 AD, St Denis was
decapitated near modern day Montmarte, but picked his head up and walked outside
Paris to St Denis where there is now a temple dedicated to him. I found the
statues interesting because the woman next to St Denis seems to be trying to get
his attention to let him know that something is wrong.
