Another traditional food for New Year's Day is "mochi" which is glutinous
(sticky) rice that has been pounded together and then formed into small
cakes and dried. These are rock hard, but if you bake them in an oven, they
soften up and puff up like a balloon. The puffed up mochi is then put into
a special soup and eaten for dinner.
