A traditional New Year's meal in Japan is grilled snapper. The Japanese
word for snapper is "tai", and the word "omedetai" is the word for
a happy or aupicious event (it's also a polite word to use for
pregnancy). Because the last part of "omedetai" is "tai", eating "tai"
is supposed to bring good luck and happiness, and is a traditional part
of a New Year's meal.
