This little boy (Shoutarou) is our neighbour two floors above us whose
mother is Japanese and father is American. This photo was taken on
May 5th which is children's day in Japan. While it is called children's day,
it is more of a celebration for young boys (much in the same way that
March 3rd was a celebration of young girls). Before May 5th, families with
boys hang "Koi" kites outside their residences, and often display little
glass cases inside their homes in celebration of their child (in a similar
manner to the dolls displayed for girls on March 3rd). Shoutarou is three
months older than Karuna (about 7 months old when this photo was taken).
